Fresh from the publication of Consciousness Came First, I was delighted to join Brendon Orr on the Podmasana podcast for a thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation exploring consciousness, perennial philosophy, and some of the deepest questions concerning the nature of mind, matter, and reality itself.
Drawing upon themes from my recent book Consciousness Came First, the discussion examines whether consciousness is merely a by-product of brain activity or whether it is, in fact, the fundamental ground from which mind, matter, and life emerge.
The conversation explores evidence and perspectives drawn from modern science, including quantum physics and neurocardiology, alongside insights preserved within the perennial wisdom tradition. Topics include the relationship between the brain and consciousness, the role of the heart in human cognition and awareness, the sevenfold nature of the human constitution, and the wider implications of reincarnation and karma for understanding human evolution.
One of the central themes considered is the possibility that the brain does not produce consciousness, but rather receives and transmits it, much as a radio receives and transmits signals from a deeper source. This transductive model offers an alternative to the prevailing materialist paradigm and opens new avenues for understanding both human nature and the living universe we inhabit.
